Day out in Lincoln: random portraits with Sara

As part of a spontaneous day out with one of my closest friends and fellow Lincoln student Sara. I took a few portraits of her following the same framing of her at the right and the background being blurred. I was simply playing around with different portrait techniques, as this technique gives the impression of her reflecting about something, generating a thoughtful quality to the images.

Sara has a film review blog that she's just started, and as she's a film student the contents bound to be pretty good:

Lincoln cathedral

As a spur of the moment thing, I wanted to take images of Lincoln Cathedral and the surrounding area. As many people in Lincoln know, you cant really be classed as a media student until you have take photos of the cathedral or the Brayford Quay canal. This prompted me to be a little bit more experimental with my images, taking photos of portions of the cathedral I found particularly interesting and elements of the surrounding area such as the road sign, fence posts and wall. I decided to play with the metering modes, gaining and interesting perspective through a diminishing shallow deth of field in some of the images.

University first year project: Smoking portraits

Another project I carried out in first year were portraits revolving around a more specific topic. I decided to focus on the topic of smoking, however I approached it in a more unconventional way. I decided to give my non-smoker subjects lit cigarettes to hold. This enabled me to produce a series of kinda awkward portraits as they are not used to holding cigarettes.

University first year project: Candid portraits

As a student, I was bound to feature some pretty generic candid portraiture, i.e. where the subject is not expecting the image to be taken. The subjects in question are people on my media course and the location is the university pub The Swan. The last image probably turned out the best due to the great depth of field and ambient lighting. I used a 50mm canon portrait lens by the way, this is probably my favourite lens out there.

University first year project: Triptych

This is one of my first year projects, involving a simple triptych of found objects. This brief was kinda strange as we had to go to a specific area of Lincoln and find three objects. My area was the market place, so I bought some fruit and veg as literally everything else was wither rubbish or too big to carry. As we couldn't use a studio, i had to create a small studio set-up in my student kitchen using a side table and my desk lamp. I even covered a pan lid in foil as a reflector (head in hands as i say this).
